R&D center to focus on ships
March 13, 2010
Dassault Systemes, a French firm that makes three-dimensional software, agreed yesterday to set up a research and development center in Korea that will focus on designing leisure ships.

The deal with the Daegu-Gyeongbuk Free Economic Zone lays the groundwork for the R&D facility, which is to open in April and specialize in 3-D product life cycle (PLM) management solutions for shipbuilding, the Ministry of Knowledge Economy said.

The French company is expected to invest 36 billion won ($31.7 million) to the center over the next five years, officials said.

¡°The new R&D facility can help Korea plot a course to develop cruise ships, yachts and small leisure boats that have been overlooked by local yards in the past,¡± a ministry official said.

Dassault is the largest PLM solutions provider in the world with a 26 percent market share.

The company has 22 R&D centers worldwide. Yonhap
