| The Federation of Korean Industries, a local business advocacy group, launched a committee yesterday to develop strategies to create 3 million jobs as a contribution to government efforts to fight unemployment. The committee plans to conduct policy studies and will hold monthly meetings to work out polices that it will then submit to the National Employment Strategy Meeting presided over by President Lee Myung-bak. The committee consists of the CEOs of the country¡¯s 20 largest conglomerates as well as 14 advisers. ¡±Recently, increased government spending and growing exports helped the country overcome the economic crisis quickly, but the public is not benefiting from the economic recovery due to stagnant job growth,¡± FKI head Cho Suck-rai said in a speech. The country¡¯s unemployment rate stood at 5 percent in January, up from 3.6 percent a year earlier. The ceremony was held at the Chosun Hotel in central Seoul. Several top government officials attended, including Prime Minister Chung Un-chan, Grand National Party Chairman Chung Mong-joon and Democratic Party Floor Leader Lee Kang-rae. The federation said the committee would propose ways to nurture the country¡¯s service sector, which is considered less developed than other developed countries¡¯. It will also propose ways to support tourism. The participants also discussed the Seoul G-20 Business Summit scheduled for Nov. 10 and 11, just ahead of the G-20 Summit proper. The FKI will co-sponsor the meeting, to which organizers plan to invite over 100 business leaders mostly from G-20 countries. By Limb Jae-un [jbiz91@joongang.co.kr] |
