Kim Nam-deuk, the president of the institute, signed a memorandum of understanding on Nov. 25 with Almaty Mayor Akhmetzhan Yesimov to cooperate closely on these issues. The two inked the deal in a reception room at Almaty City Hall. Both sides agreed to work together on the safe management of elevators and team up to designate regulations as well as establish inspection organizations and information management systems. The overall goal centers around cooperating to prevent accidents and help Korean elevator companies enter the Almaty market. The Korea Elevator Safety Institute will conduct safety inspections on elevators in Almaty - the largest city in Kazakhstan - and provide guidance on the timing of elevator replacement. Under the partnership, the two also will conduct technology training programs to help Almaty develop elevator experts. The Korea Lift College in South Gyeongsang Province will run the training. Almaty will accept elevator Korea’s safety standards, guidelines, inspection measures and supervisory systems, making them systematic throughout the industry. “The MOU with Almaty will help local elevator parts, production, installation and maintenance service companies enter the Central Asian and Russian markets,” Kim said. The Korea Elevator Safety Institute plans to expand elevator technology exchange with China, Vietnam, South America and Africa as well as Central Asia to strengthen its global development force.
