The GM Daewoo has moved fast to recover from the damage inflicted by the global economic downturn. The export of its popular compact vehicle is part of the company¡¯s effort to overcome downsized sales, the company said. In the first 10 months of this year, GM Daewoo¡¯s units sold totaled 457,537, 41.3 percent less on-year. ¡°The Matiz Creative will be a major model that will lead GM Daewoo¡¯s exports,¡± said Hwang Woo-seong, managing director at GM Daewoo¡¯s Changwon plant where the cars have been manufactured. ¡°The Matiz Creative is a vehicle that many consumers around the world are interested in thanks to its exceptional design and certified safety.¡± The Matiz Creative cars that shipped out of Masan, South Gyeongsang, were the 1.0-liter and 1.2-liter gasoline models and will be sold under the name Chevrolet Spark. GM Daewoo said it is targeting exports of more than 20,000 units by the end of this year. The company said it will increase the volume of Matiz Creative exports next year. The vehicle will be sold in 150 countries around the world. However, exports to the North American market are not currently scheduled until 2012. GM Daewoo said Wednesday its mother company, the U.S. automaker General Motors, will be manufacturing a revamped version of GM Daewoo¡¯s popular Lacetti Premiere midsize sedan. The Lacetti Premiere will be built at GM¡¯s plant in Lordsown, Ohio, and will be sold as the Chevrolet Cruze from July next year. The company said production of the Lacetti Premiere in the U.S. will meet rising demand of the vehicle. Currently the vehicle is produced at the company¡¯s plant in Gunsan, North Jeolla.
