| Korean electronics firms continued to dominate the global TV market during this third quarter with over a 30 percent share, but Chinese companies are gaining rapidly, especially in the LCD TV area. According to leading market research firm DisplaySearch, Samsung Electronics and LG Electronics ranked first and second in the world TV market, with a 17.2 percent and 14.8 percent market share, respectively. The two Korean companies were the only two to see a double digit market share during the July to September quarter. Samsung Electronics has ranked first in terms of units sold for 13 straight quarters. Following were Japan¡¯s Panasonic, at 6.9 percent; China¡¯s TCL, at 6.6 percent; and Japan¡¯s Sony, at 5.9 percent. Although Samsung and LG were still leading the pack for LCD TVs, their Chinese counterparts were gaining. Samsung Electronics and LG Electronics again ranked first and second in global LCD TV market share with 18.4 percent and 10.7 percent, respectively. Sony ranked third with an 8.7 percent market share, followed by Sharp and Toshiba with 6.4 percent and 5.8 percent, respectively. Japan¡¯s collective market share fell from 35.3 percent during the second quarter, to 34.3 percent during the third. However, compared to their 40.3 percent average market share for all of 2008, Japanese firms have lost much ground. Chinese firms are filling the gap, collectively garnering a 21.4 percent market share, up from 16.9 percent during the second quarter. This is the first time that Chinese firms have seen more than a 20 percent market share. Meanwhile, LG Display announced this week that it has formed a joint venture with Chinese company TPV Technology. LG will have a 51 percent controlling interest in the venture, called L&T Display Technology, in Xiamen to produce LCD modules, TVs and computer monitors. ¡°One of the key strategies for Korean LCD makers will be to increase China-related businesses,¡± said Kim Yu-jin, a researcher at Taurus Investment & Securities.
