Mobile TV tech adopted for U.S.
October 19, 2009
The Advanced Television Standards Committee announced Friday that it had adopted as the United States standard for mobile digital television a technology proposed by the Korean firms Samsung Electronics and LG Electronics.

The international non-profit organization develops standards for digital television transmission, and it has been working on mobile broadcasting since May 2007. The organization selected a technology that uses the same standard as LG¡¯s terrestrial digital television VSB and Samsung¡¯s Advanced-VSB.

The technology allows mobile devices to receive high-definition digital television signals anywhere, even on the subway. With the ATSC decision, the system would be usable on mobile phones, portable DVD players and MP3 players in North America.

¡°Being selected shows our leadership in the broadcasting and technology sector,¡± said Cho Byung-duck, executive vice president of the Digital Media and Communications R&D Center at Samsung Electronics. ¡°It is also meaningful that the standard was drawn out by the cooperation of two local firms.¡±
