| The liquid crystal display market at present is currently experiencing stunted demand and growth, according to Chang Won-kie, president of Samsung Electronics¡¯ LCD division. ¡°There is concern that if market demand does not meet the amount of new investments in the development of eighth and tenth generation LCD panels, the oversupply of LCDs might continue in the long-term,¡± said Chang yesterday during the opening ceremony of the International Meeting on Information Display 2009 held at Kintex in Goyang, Gyeonggi. To prevent oversupply, Chang said that companies need to focus on profitability in tandem with overall demand, instead of increasing supply in order to raise their market share. He stressed the importance of preparing for ¡°the second era in the LCD market,¡± in which ¡°LCDs will have to meet the needs of a digital era instead of the analog-oriented lifestyle of the past.¡± The ¡°new LCD TV¡± according to Chang, will be eco-friendly, energy-efficient and be ¡°ultra high definition,¡± which is four times higher in resolution compared to ¡°full high definition.¡± Chang also said that LCDs must actively be applied to other products besides TVs, including the making of personal digital boards, e-paper and interior design products for the home. On Samsung Electronics¡¯ investment plans in the near future, Chang said that as fourth quarters and first quarters are traditional off seasons for LCDs, the company will be careful with its investment plans, although it has enough liquidity in comparison to other companies to produce more LCDs. ¡°Within three years, the market trend will call for displays that are more than 60 inches, are ultra-low dispersion, and 480 hertz,¡± he said. ¡°The biggest risk factor for next year is price competition with our rivals.¡± By Cho Jae-eun [jainnie@joongang.co.kr] |
