Nongshim, Korea¡¯s biggest maker of snacks and instant noodles, is hoping to go healthy.

The company yesterday announced plans to increase the number of ¡°jangsu,¡± or ¡°long life,¡± products it sells from the current 10 percent of overall sales to 30 percent by 2015.

Nongshim¡¯s jangsu products, mainly instant noodles, include less sodium, calories and artificial additives and feature no trans fats or monosodium glutamate.

¡°Nongshim has been the No. 1 ramen company for the last 20 years,¡± said Chairman Sun Wook at the company¡¯s Gumi plant last week. ¡°We do not plan to sit comfortably in this position alone, but change to become ¡®shin¡¯ [new in Korean] Nongshim,¡± a pun on Nongshim¡¯s top seller, Shin Ramen.

By 2015, the company, which exports its products to 70 countries globally with emphasis on the U.S. and China, is aiming for 4 trillion won ($3.22 billion) in annual sales. Last year, its sales were 1.48 trillion won.

Sun also revealed plans to export cold nengmyeon noodles. ¡°No one thought of mass producing nengmyeon,¡± Sun said. ¡°But now our nengmyeon sales have risen to 4 to 5 percent of total earnings and we have sold more than 100 billion units worldwide so far.¡±
