| Anyone who eats protected wild animals could face punishment beginning in July. The Ministry of Environment said yesterday it had drafted a bill that imposes prison terms and fines on persons convicted of consuming protected animals. Now, only poachers are punished, but the bill, if made law, would impose up to a one-year prison term or up to 5 million won ($4,310) in fines for violations. Among the animals now protected are Manchurian bears, mountain goats, elk, wild boar, badgers, frogs, and many kinds of snakes. Farmers and fishermen who spare the animals and suffer damage from them, can seek government compensation. |
