Gimpo airport to be shopping mecca
January 23, 2003
Korea Airport Corporation said yesterday that it would renovate three of the four terminals at the Gimpo Airport.

"The airport will become a large shopping mall, both for passengers who have free time before boarding and for outside shoppers," an official at the corporation said.

Attractions such as food courts, coffee houses and a golf practice range will open at the airport terminals by the end of May. A large discount outlet for electronics goods will open in March. The corporation is also planning to build a theme park in front of the former No. 2 international terminal, the official said. Construction will begin in July.

The renovation began in December, as a wedding hall and a grand ballroom leased space in the airport, the official noted. In addition, a multiplex and a discount store will open Friday.

Gimpo Airport, established in 1939, formerly handled most of Korea's international flight operations, but the airport is doing mostly domestic flight business since the opening of the Incheon International Airport in March 2001.

"Gimpo Airport had plenty of space, as international flights were transferred to the Incheon terminals," the Korea Airport Corporation said. "People living in Seoul and Gyeonggi province find the shopping mall, located near the border between them, accessible and comfortable because it is close to where they live, and of course there are many stores and at-tractions."
